Sigma DP2 mini-site gets cleaned up

This Sigma Talk thread notifies everyone that Sigma has cleaned up and re-organized their DP2 mini-site, now available directly and without browser-hogging Flash multimedia!

This is actually a very clean website design, and we are indeed surprised that manufacturers are not able to organize within and produce these type of things when a new camera is announced. I'm sure eventually they'll catch up :)

Sigma talks to Focus Numerique

The french website focus numerique is in Japan covering the PIE trade show and they have posted a series of interesting interviews. One such is of interest to RAWsumers, as they talk to Sigma about the DP2 and about other things Foveonesque. Just a couple of days earlier, the same website had posted side-by-side pictures of the DP2 vs DP1. Pictures of the camera bodies, not pictures taken with the cameras.

Speaking of the DP2, it is available for pre-ordering for $650 at:
+ Amazon.com
+ Adorama

Shock! Canon SX1is gets trashed by dpreview!

You don't see this happening often. It's usually Olympus, Pentax or Sigma/Foveon that are on the receiving end of a trashing at dpreview, but it looks like what goes around comes around for Canon as dpreview's review of the Canon SX1is (see post at main blog) delivers a major trashing at a camera that the photographic world was looking at with anticipation.

Anticipating because this was the first implementation of Canon's CMOS sensor at the compact digital camera level. This is a 1/2.3" CMOS sensor, and as we have seen with the Fuji SuperCCD sensors, the benefits do not necessarily scale down.

However, one thing that might be promising for Canon users, and perhaps the potential of a CMOS-based G-series camera with a 1/1.72" or larger sensor, is that the Fuji SuperCCD did much better at 1/1.6" and 1/1.7" than it did at 1/2.5". In-fact Fuji abandoned the 1/2.5" sensor size and has "stuck" with 1/1.6". And they even went a little bit bigger, at 2/3" with the giant-sumer S100fs.

Sigma DP2 played with at PIE by Focus Numerique

French website Focus Numerique has posted at least a dozen pictures from the PIE 2009 trade show in Japan of the Sigma DP2 camera body. This includes half a dozen pictures of the DP2 side-by-side with the DP1. Maybe Sigma needs to offer a two-for-one special :-)

Great job by Focus Numerique in giving DP-series fans a good way to "measure" the two cameras side-by-side!

Is a new Nikon NRW-RAWsumer coming?

There is some speculation by Thom Hogan that the latest flap in the Nikon Capture NX2 update may be a sign of a new NRW-based Nikon digital camera coming up. Thom does not provide any speculation as to what camera this might be. You can find Thom's post under the "March 26" heading. There are no direct links to individual posts so if you are reading this post a few days after it was posted, you will have to "hunt" for it in Thom's archives pages.

But the most likely possibility if such a camera were coming would be for a sequential follow-up on the P6000. Although we would love to be pleasantly surprised with something more exciting or at least the P6000 re-done, and redone right this time :)

Sample pictures from Canon SX1is

DP Interface has posted sample pictures taken with the reborn Canon SX1is, which now has RAW as well. Thus mentioned on this blog. This also means that a full-review by DP Interface is coming up soon as well.

The sample are available as full-size downloads and they are a combination of test-charts for pixel-peeping purposes and real-world samples too.

New Leica firmware update installs okay

The Imaging Insider tried the new Leica firmware update and they report that everything was okay. No explosions and blue-screns! Check the Insider post for the link to the Leica support page that offers the firmware update binaries. We still don't have a review-cluster for the D-Lux4, but we hope we can get it done when we do our next major review-cluster-a-thon!

OneCall blogger picks the Fuji S100fs

One of the OneCall bloggers was trying to pick his next digital camera, and after considering a trio of RAWsumers, he decided on the Fuji S100fs. The runner ups? The Canon G10 and the Casio EX-FH20. The Fuji "giant-sumer" seems to be flying under the radar, but I think if Fuji's next refresh of this model adds an EXR sensor and makes some performance improvements and tweaks, they may get a boost in buzz about the camera.

For more on the S100fs, be sure to check its list of reviews.

The Sigma DP2 gets a reasonable price of $650

The Sigma DP2 gets a price of $650 and it is available for pre-ordering. This is the starting price, so obviously it will eventually go down in price. It will also be interesting to see how this affects the DP1 price and also its availability.

Although granted, both of these cameras are only for a certain group of photography enthusiasts, so they behave differently from the mass-market compacts and DSLRs.

Fuji S100fs takes on the Nikon D700

In this long and growing dpreview Fuji forum thread, a photographer is comparing pictures taken with the Fuji S100fs giant-sumer with the 35mm full framer Nikon D700.

Needless to say they are different type of cameras and in different price ranges, but that doesn't mean one cannot compare them and debate it all :)

New Nikon P6000 review at Let's Go

Let's Go check the brand new Nikon Coolpix P6000 review at multi-lingual website Let's Go Digital. The P6000 is a semi-RAWsumer, we still haven't forgotten of how badly Nikon treated this release by putting this camera in "RAW hell".

If you are in a hurry, the conclusions are on page #9, but as always, we won't spoil the findings here.

Olympus C5050 gets a shoutout in Olympus interview

In their recent interview with dpreview, Olympus gave a shout-out to the Olympus C5050, an older but influential RAWsumer of its time. Sadly there was no mention of other future RAWsumer work :(

HDR from an Olympus C5050 RAW

Now that's a blast from the past. Just recently added to our flickr pool was an HDR picture created from a RAW file taken with the Olympus C5050. Check it out at the photographer's flickr page. The picture you ask? It's a shoe house. For reals. A life-size house, shaped like a shoe!

RAWsumers have another good month at MAP Camera

MAP Camera in Japan, in associated with digitalcamera.jp have posted their latest top selling cameras list for February 2009. For those not familiar, MAP Camera is catering (based on sales) to enthusiast and advanced photographers, not the average consumer.

The lists are filled with DSLRs and prosumers. The new cameras top ten has a new number #1, a camera that is hard to find in the US market, but apparently not so in Japan, because the LX3 has jumped to the #1 spot, displacing the Ricoh GRD II which fell to #2. A very strong showing for RAWsumers, holding the top two spots, but that's about it for them in the Top 10.

In the Used Cameras Top 20 however, there are only two RAWsumers, the GRD2 at #11 and the Canon G10 at #14. Usually there's more than two.

Olympus SP565uz reviewed by Steve's Digicams

We have a new RAWsumer review! It is a small sensor, but it's the only way to get a big zoom lens with it using currently available and affordable technology. The review is of the Olympus SP565uz at Steve's Digicams. The SP565uz, despite its model name, it is the most recently released superzoom from Olympus, while the mega-mega 26X zoom SP590uz was announced in early 2009 but has not yet been released.

Nikon P6000 test samples posted by DP Interface

DP Interface has posted test sample pictures using the Nikon P6000. These are ideal for pixel-peeping as they go from ISO 64 to 6400, all taken at the 28mm (equivalent) wide-angle setting.

This is also an indicator that a full review is coming from DP Interface in the next few days. For more P6000 reviews, be sure to check its list of reviews at our review organizer, which you can quickly access from anywhere on the net using this easy to remember url NoisyReviews.com.

Ricoh GX200 with VF1 shipped for $460

If you are interested in the Ricoh GX200 [reviews], then you may also be interested in this special offer by Adorama! They have bundled the GX200 with the external VF1 for $460 and with free shipping. With the LX3K being hard to find, and the Canon G10 perched at around $410, and sadly no new RAWsumers at PMA 2009, the GX200 is becoming more competitive as its price slides down.

Lack of RAWsumers and real world choices

Those of you who followed the PMA insanity may recall that out of the 100+ new cameras in 2009, just a couple are offering native RAW support. This is extremely frustrating for photographers who want to use Serious Compacts instead of big DSLRs.

So with that as a preface, here is an interesting article at Wouter 28mm on making (camera) choices.

More Sigma DP2 sample pictures

Let's Go Digital has been busy at PMA offering full-size sample pictures with different cameras there. One of them was the Sigma DP2 and they posted full-size sample pictures early today. Please note that they note that the camera they used is not a full production unit, so please keep that in mind when evaluating image quality.

This is in addition to other sample pictures with the DP2:

+ official Sigma DP2 page (17 pictures)

The Samsung TL320 (WB100) is NOT a rawsumer

One of our readers in this post pointed out that dpreview removed the mention of RAW from the specification list of the Samsung TL320 (WB100), and since that was the main mention of RAW, we can now safely remove the camera from the list of RAWsumers :-(

Sigma DP2 sample pictures from digitalcamera.jp

Japanese camera site DigitalCamera.jp has posted sample Sigma DP2 pictures they took in Vegas during the PMA trade show. Now at Amazon and with a discount: Casio EX-F1

Casio's big daddy "EX-F1" is finally available for online ordering. Amazon itself has managed to get a few units in-stock and they are offering them for $951 with free shipping. This is just a $50 discount off the regular price, and it is certainly a high-price relatively, so the camera is basically ideally suited for the people who must-have-it. You know who you are :)

For more on the EX-F1, be sure to check out state of the nation round-up of the camera. This was as of April 2008, but not much has changed about the camera, other than its online availability.

Disappointing PMA for RAWsumers

So far this has been a very disappointing PMA for RAWsumers. The only new camera in this segment is not exactly new-new, it is the Sigma DP2, getting its 2nd official announcement. It is certainly promising and better than zero for sure!

We have just finished creating our usual Sigma DP2 announcement recap at the main blog, so be sure to check it out. Sigma has already posted 17 full-size DP2 sample pictures taken by four different photographers.

Sadly, neither pricing, nor availability have been given. The amorphous wait continues...

Sigma DP2 will be shown at PMA 2009

The Imaging Inside has some great news for DP2 fans! The camera will be shown at the PMA 2009 trade show. Stay tuned to the Imaging Insider for continuous coverage of the trade show!

As you may recall, the DP2 was also available at the Focus on Imaging trade show in the UK last week.

This is certainly good news as it brings the camera closer to reality! People are so vigorously searching for it at Amazon, it already has a couple of pre-filled search-queries for it, however, there is no DP2 listed.
