What is a RAWsumer (revisited)

When we came up with the RAWsumer idea, things were simpler. The Ricoh GXR system did not exist to muddy the waters. At the time, the thought of such a system was considered a wild forum fan-addict fantasy :)

So now with GXR and Micro Four Thirds and other systems coming up, it is time to distill the RAWsumer definition - for the purposes of this blog.

After some soul-searching, we decided to continue to use RAWsumer to refer to single-unit sealed cameras that support RAW natively. For example, cameras like the Canon G10, Panasonic LX3, Sony R1, Minolta A2, etc. This is regardless of camera size, as long as the camera is a single, self-contained body.

What is not a RAWsumer? Everything else :) So, the Ricoh GXR system, Micro 4/3rds, Samsung NX series, DSLRs, IL rangefinders, all those and similar things are not RAWsumer.

This is just one of the many groupings and classifications out there. For example, Serious Compacts, refers to cameras that can produce serious photography with a compact size, regardless of fixed or removable lens or sensor. Others, like Mason Resnick at the ALC blog, use the system compacts classification. Others call them "advanced compacts" which may be based on price + feature-sets. And on, and on, and on...

Fuji S200 EXR review at Trusted Reviews

The big-daddy of our times, the Fuji S200 EXR with its SuperCCD-EXR lens has received a brand new review today at Trusted Reviews. The review is by their regular reviewer Cliff Smith. The camera also has a $50 mail-in rebate that went live on November 1st, so if you already purchased it from an authorized dealer, you qualify anyway!

But the biggest question and biggest frustration for fans of SuperCCD sensors is Fuji's refusal to release a serious compact digital camera that uses the SuperCCD sensor. The F200-EXR does not have a number of features popular with photographers (eg RAW), and the S200-EXR is way too big for someone to carry around for general/street-photography. Wake up Fuji!

Ricoh causes RAWsumer confusion

Today's leak on the Ricoh GXR system is creating some confusion on the RAWsumer front. Way back when we started RAWsumer, there were fixed-lens cameras with RAW support and DSLRs with RAW support. This new Ricoh lens+sensor combo is creating confusion!

We have to meditate on this since the sensor goes with the lens, not the camera body. There is an interchangeability aspect, so that makes it less RAWsumer-ish. Ommm... Ommmm... Ommm...

Fuji S200 EXR review by Steve's

Steve's Digicams has just posted their review of the Fuji S200 EXR. This is Fuji's 2009 model using the 1/1.6" SuperCCD-EXR sensor found also in the F200 EXR. The camera has went smaller in terms of sensor size, as its predecessor, the S100fs was using a 2/3" SuperCCD non-EXR sensor. Perhaps Fuji is trying to be fiscally conservative by having one sensor instead of two.

As usual, we won't spoil their findings here :)

RAWsumers continue to do well at MAP

MAP Camera in association with digitalcamera.jp have posted their September 2009 rankings of their best selling digital cameras. As usual, there was a strong presence of RAWsumers, grabbing two of the top three, and three of the top six spots. Yes, the Panasonic LX3, which unlike the US market, does not have any supply issues in Japan! Ricoh has the other two RAWsumer spots in the top 10. These are the new-in-box rankings.

In the Used Top 20, the Ricoh GRD II leads the way, with two more RAWsumers, also from Ricoh staying there. Interestingly, the Canon G-series which typically has at least one camera in the top 20, is now gone.

The rest of the spots are mostly taken by DSLRs, so be sure to check it out if interested.

Remodeling complete!

All apologies for the craziness with the template you have experienced the last 50 minutes. We have now switched to a two-column format. The main changes are complete.

There are two columns, the left column starts with a list of the RAWsumer reviews, followed by the latest posts here at the RAWsumer blog.

The right column starts with some basic navigation features, such as a link to the front page of the RAWsumer blog (HOME), links to the Contact and About pages and the RSS feed, followed by a Search box. After that, we feature the latest RAWsumer-themed headlines from the main noisy blog (1001noisycameras.com), followed by the RAWsumer deals from the Camera Deals blog (NoisyDeals.com), and followed by a list of the latest posts from this blog (RAWsumer blog).

The remaining boxes are the same as they were on the previous template of the blog, but they may look different because there is only one column. We will fine-tune those over the next few weeks.

If you have any feedback or suggestions for this update, please leave a comment or contact us. There's also a poll right below:

We will convert this blog from a three-column to a two-column format. This will give us a longer sidebar which will make it easier to read the RAWsumer headlines from the other Noisy blogs, in an attempt to bring out more of the RAWsumer-related topics we write.

We'll post an update once the update is completed :)

The Fuji S200fs RAWzoomer gets reviewed!

Because of the waves and waves of exciting cameras, some of the new models of 2009 has fallen below the radar. One of the cameras in this situation is the Fuji S200fs, but now it is getting some of the spotlight as CNet Asia has posted their review of this RAWzoomer!

As you may recall, with this model, Fuji went to a 1/1.6" SuperCCD-EXR, versus the 2/3" sensor of the S100fs. This probably makes this easier in terms of logistics for Fuji as they have fewer sensor sizes to worry about. But they did launch a 1/2.4" SuperCCD sensor as well for the fun-zoom F70-EXR.

Canon SX1is review at Imaging Resource

Canon's forgotten born-again RAWsumer is getting a share of the spotlight today as one of the two major camera review sites has just published its review. Check it out at Imaging Resource.

The SX1is has had its troubles, being priced well above all other RAWzoomers, even the Fuji models that have larger sensors. The other problem it has been facing is that its Canon CMOS sensor raised expectations, perhaps unrealistically, and when the first samples and reviews came out, there was a letdown.

So now that Imaging Resource has put it through the paces, what else did we learn? No spoilers here :)

New features coming up

Because of the waves and waves of new cameras, it is very time-consuming to post every related update both here and at the other noisy blogs. So in order to improve efficiency, we are going to put the RAWsumer-related updates from the other noisy blogs (main and camera deals blog) at the top right corner of RAWsumer. That way, you can keep up with the other updates from this spot.

The RAWsumer blog will continue as it has been doing in the last few months, featuring RAWsumer-related stories that are not posted on the main blog.

We'll implement the updates when we can find some time to do so!

Canon G11 is a new RAWsumer that differs from the G10

We just finished the round-up of the Canon G11 announcement at the main blog. In a nut-shell, the G11 brings back the twist-and-shout LCD, and opts for a more modest megapixel-count (10mp 1/1.7") than the G10.

It goes hand-in-hand with the S90, and the duo is perhaps intended to sandwich the Panasonic LX3 in-between and give photographers two different alternative approaches.

The G11 does have an optical viewfinder which is a sticking point for some photographers out here and out there.

You can learn more the camera at the announcement coverage post at the main blog.

Hooray, two more RAWsumers today :-) You can see the list of all new RAWsumers in 2009, and of each year, going all the way back to 2002 at the RAWsumer List.

New Canon S90 is a RAWsumer!

Canon has announced six new digital cameras today, and TWO of them are RAWsumers. Canon has finally seen the RAWsumer light, after other manufacturers rekindled interest in this segment by producing interesting or promising products (GX-series, LX-series, etc).

The two new models are the G11, which is a sequential update to the G10, and the most interesting of the two perhaps, starting at f2 (yes, f-TWO), is the Canon S90.

We are rounding these up in detail at the main blog. We'll add a link to the G11 coverage once we finish up that camera's roundup!

The Panasonic FZ35/FZ38 is starting to come out, and a new owner is sharing their first impressions in the Panasonic dpreview forum. The photographer is a FZ-28 owner, so you get plenty of commentary on how it compares.

Also, the photographer answers a lot of questions asked by fellow forum members. And if you have any questions, ask them away in that thread, as it is busy but not near 150 yet!

Ricoh GX200's black and white vacation

If you want to see the GX-200 in real-world action, taking black and white vacation photos, then be sure to check out Wouter 28mm where the camera (and the photographer of course) visit a Dutch coastal town.

These are the type of pictures that seem to capture the spirit of the compact RAWsumers, small enough that you can take on vacation without feeling like you have taken with you the whole inventory of B&H Photo ;-)

(SOLD OUT) LX3S was shipping for $500 (updated)

As of Sunday afternoon, all the units, silver and black selling at $500 have sold out :-( It was good while it lasted, and it interested than even during the sleepy hours of the weekend the camera still managed to sell out. Case in point, the black LX3 standard kit lasted less than 30 minutes at B&H. Although, granted, there was build-up demand since B&H was closed earlier in the day, but it was displayed as in-stock, so a number of photographers set up their alarm clocks and started hitting the buy-buy-buy button at exactly 9:15pm EST :-)

Original post: LX3 silver hunters, you may be interested to know that the camera is in-stock and shipping right now for $500! You can find the latest updates at the LX3 in-stock update at the main blog. We try to have the latest stock status in one place, that way updates are easier to make and faster!

One RAWsumer makes the Top Three

The Adorama 100-in-100 has posted their most influential system-compacts opinion. In their definition, Micro Four Thirds cameras are includes since they are compact in size and they are obviously part of a system. But of the three cameras selected, there was one RAWsumer chosen as a runner-up.

No, not the hard to find LX3, not the Foveonesque DP2, not one of the Ricohs, but the trusty Canon G10.

RAWsumers reign supreme at MAP in June

Japanese website digitalcamera.jp has posted their rankings for June 2009, where they list the best-selling cameras at MAP Camera.

This was a very good month for RAWsumers, with the LX3 grabbing the #1 spot, the Ricoh GRD2 grabbing the #2 spot, and the Foveonesque DP2 being at #4. There is one more RAWsumer in the top 10, the GX200. Not a bad showing for RAWsumers at all, having a 4-6 score against DSLRs which everybody and their mother is releasing by the dozen these days ;-)

But RAWsumers are not particularly hot in the "Used Top 20", where just three of them make it, and the highest ranked one is at #9, once again, the GRD2. Also in the Used 20 is the original GRD and the DP2.

No Canon G10 or G9 this time around...

Two Sigma DP2 reviews in the last 48 hours

It is raining Sigma DP2 reviews Foveon fans! First up, Steve Huff, a photographer-style (experiential, not pixel-peepiential) reviewer has spent two weeks with the Sigma DP2 and has shared his findings in his new review.

Next up, the Imaging Insider spotlights a CNet-style review of the DP2, this one created by Rod Lawton at CNet UK. Yes, CNET is everywhere, and now that CBS bought them, you may find one in your backyard ;-)

As you can see from the above reviews, the DP2 is taking a beating, but also getting a lot of praise. Neither one of the two reviewers above are "Foveon converts", so each one could be a good test-case of how a photographer (Stephen Huff) and a tech-junkie (CNet) might perceive te camera.

And some good news for DP2 fans, it will be one of the next cameras that gets a review-cluster at the Review Organizer.

Sharpening Fuji S100fs pictures

An interesting discussion in the dpreview Fuji forums is discussing sharpening Fuji S100fs pictures. Photoshop needed. You can also download the action the OP is using and try it for yourself!

The Fuji S100fs [reviews] is the Fuji giantsumer with an 11mp 2/3" SuperCCD sensor and a big lens to go with it that was announced in January 2008. The best price we found among the reputable retailers at the momnent is $500 at B&H Photo. Casio EX-F1 computer-control enters the US market

The news from Japan two weeks ago that the Casio EX-F1 was getting computer-control functionality are now being announced in the US market by Casio. You can read about it at the ALC, Imaging Resource and such.

The problem of course with the Casio EX-F1 is its price. It came out at $1000 and it is still at $1000. When it came out, there was no DSLR-Video. Now there is DSLR-Video and there is Micro-Four-Thirds-video. And let's not forget that initially Casio did not allow (!) the sale of this camera online. Now that's a brilliant move for the 21st century.

But regardless, the pricing is guaranteed to keep the EX-F1 as a micro-niche product, even though, at least in our opinion, price-aside, this is a promising move by Casio, with a modest 6mp 1/1.8" sensor and a reasonable 12X IS lens. And yes, RAW support of course, which is why we are talking about it here :-)

The Olympus SP565uz is a RAWsumer

While writing about it at the Camera Deals blog, as its price has now dropped to $244, we realized that the SP565uz was not included in our list of RAWsumers.

As you may recall, in typical press-release-FAIL, it wasn't clear whether the camera had RAW when it was announced in August of 2008. Eventually it came out that it sure did have RAW, as shown in this review at Steve's Digicams.

So now we have rewritten history for 2008, and added the Olympus SP565uz to our list of RAWsumers, ranging from 2002 to 2009. Sadly not a whole lot of RAWsumers in 2009, but a healthy total of fifteen in 2008!

It has also been added to the reverse-chronological-order list of RAWsumers in the middle column of every page of this blog. Look for the orange block that says "Meet the RAWsumers".

Ricoh GR has tea-party for the ladies

If the computer-translator got it right, Ricoh is planning tea-parties with the ladies according to DC-Watch, to promote their GR-line of digital cameras.

And it looks like they have some more on the tea parties at the Ricoh blog. Both pages are computer-translated.

Rytterfalk plays with Casio EX-F1

Foveonesque Carl Rytterfalk has just posted a couple of sample videos taken with the Casio EX-F1, showing its magic slow-mo video mode and things like that. Video is not RAWsumer, but the EX-F1 is a RAWsumer, so that's how we justify sneaking this one in :-)

This is a trip down memory lane (okay, just four years ago), but it is a very interesting read and it perhaps rekindles the hope that someone out of all the digital camera manufacturers will start producing brave and creative cameras again!

Those first impressions - Sigma DP1

Wouter's 28mm blog, a friend of serious compact digital cameras, has just posted their first impressions with the Sigma DP1. We type fast and we have many typos, but this is not one of them. The first impressions is indeed on the DP1, DP-ONE, not the DP2.

This is based on two weeks of using the camera. As usual, we don't spoil the findings or conclusions here...

TOP opines on Sigma DP2 after yesterday's review

The Online Photographer himself (MJ) has just opined on the Sigma DP2, following the buzzworthy review of the camera yesterday by Ken Tanaka.

This is of course the second DP2 review among the non-converted, and it is quite a stark difference when you read the reviews of the "Believers" versus the "Innocenty Bystanders". This further makes the point that the DP2 is not just a casual camera or a camera you can just use, it's more of a commitment to using it despite Sigma's inexperience in making competitive 21st century "computer-cameras".
